OSWEGO COUNTY –Dive into history and learn more about Lake Ontario’s maritime heritage! National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will host diving expeditions this month that will be live streamed, allowing members of the public to watch from home.

Diving with live streamed, remotely operated vehicles outfitted with a high-definition camera and other technologies, scientists and maritime archaeologists will unveil the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary’s well-preserved shipwrecks, some dating back over 200 years.

The live dive schedule is as follows:

For more information on the virtual diving experiences, visit NOAA’s webpage.[1] Live dives will be posted on NOAA’s YouTube channel at  https://www.youtube.com/@sanctuaries/streams[2].

The Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary was designated in 2024 as NOAA’s 16th sanctuary. Spanning 1,722 square miles, it features 63 known shipwrecks and one known submerged aircraft. The live virtual expeditions offer a window into the area’s maritime past and the cultural and historical significance of the region.
