Fairgrieve students cast votes for Charlotte Award

Students at Fairgrieve Elementary School are learning about the importance of voting and the democratic process as they cast their ballots for their favorite books.

The votes will determine the winner of the 2014 Charlotte Award, which is named for the main character in E.B. White’s “Charlotte’s Web,” and aims to encourage students to read books and ultimately become life-long readers. It recognizes the authors and illustrators of such literature.

At Fairgrieve, students can examine a web containing titles of the nominees. The web, created by Oswego Reading Council member Wynnette Dohse, is a creative way for students to visualize the titles before they vote for their selection.

“The ballot web is a way to start some citizenship with the students and help them realize how important voting is,” Dohse said. “The voting is done in the library, so we can make sure we are getting all the classrooms to participate.”

Dohse noted that librarian Barb Senecal has been an instrumental figure in the process.

“She has taken on this project with open arms. We couldn’t do this without her,” Dohse said.

There are 10 titles in four age categories up for the award. All votes must be submitted by April 15. Winners will be announced at the annual New York State Reading Association conference in October.
