Fairgrieve Students Honor Veterans

FULTON – Healing local wounded warriors begins one thank-you at a time.

That message is what Fairgrieve Elementary students recently learned from Donna Kestner, director of the Oswego County Veterans’ Services.

During a recent Morning Express program at the school, she spoke with Fairgrieve students about the utmost appreciation Oswego County military veterans have for the generosity of Fulton students.

She recalled a conversation she had with a local veteran receiving care at the VA Hospital in Syracuse when the gentleman told her that he still had a card hung up on his wall, long after he received that from a Fulton student.

More thoughtfulness, he said, can help more veterans.

That is why the students and staff members at Fairgrieve recently collected monetary donations in order for staff at the VA Hospital to use toward the purchase of snacks, goodies and activities for its patients, many of whom reside in Oswego County.

Not all support will come in dollars and cents, she said. Homemade cards and notes are also always appreciated, she said.

“You might not be able to give it and that’s OK,” Kestner said. “Veterans’ Day is about saying, ‘Thank you.’”

Principal Jean Sampsell said about $200 was collected for the effort in honor of Veterans’ Day last school year.
