Throughout the next two weeks, Fairley Elementary School students and teachers will replicate the generosity of the character Sarah, in the book “The Mitten Tree” by Candace Christiansen.

Much like Sarah, students and staff recognize the importance of helping others in need.
Principal Jody Musa challenged students and staff to donate mittens and hats to keep people warm this winter and nonperishable food items to ensure local families don’t go hungry around the holidays.
Students paraded into the gymnasium with winter wear and canned/boxed food during a recent assembly, which served as a kick-off to the school’s Mitten Tree drive.

One tree has been placed outside of Musa’s office and another is outside the main front office.
Items collected will be included in the Hannibal Central School District’s Christmas Bureau program, which provides food, winter wear and special gifts to local families in need.
Last year, 175 boxes of goodies were distributed locally.
