Fairley Students Connect With Canadian Classroom

Fairley Elementary School second graders are learning all about the world, one videoconference connection at a time.

Students in Barb Mosny’s class recently participated in a “Read Around the Planet” video chat with students from Juniper Ridge Elementary in British Columbia, Canada.

Mosny’s students prepared for the event by reading books about New York State and New York City.

They selected their favorite facts and drew pictures for their new Canadian friends. Topics included Niagara Falls, the Statue of Liberty, the Twin Towers and the Freedom Tower, the New York Yankees, the New York Giants and how the eastern bluebird is the state bird, among several other topics.

The Canadian students treated Mosny’s class to a reader’s theater presentation of “The Fire Station,” an adaptation of the namesake book by Canadian author Robert Munsch.

Both classrooms then exchanged questions and information about their schools and community.

Students in Mosny’s class clapped and erupted in cheer when one of the Canadian students showed them her “I Love NY” teddy bear.

The videoconference connection was facilitated by Daniel Rupert, itinerant computer education specialist at the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation.

The connections are made possible by CiTi’s Distance Learning program.
