Fire Safety Presentation at Altmar Elementary School

Altmar Elementary School Principal Denise Penoyer welcomed two visitors from the Defiance Fire Department in Altmar to a school-wide assembly at the school on Friday, October 14. Following the school’s regular Friday gathering, two local volunteer firemen Dan Collins and Corey Holcomb visited the school to educate students about what to do if they are in a fire. The firemen cautioned the students not to hide under a bed or in a closet, even if they are afraid, but to stay low and call out “I’m here” until a fireman or rescue personnel comes to get them. They also told students that the first thing they should do was to get out of the house and go to the designated meeting spot for their family so it could be determined if all were out safely.
The firemen also shared with the students some fire prevention tips such as never play with matches, or lighters, and don’t play with hot things on a stove. They told students they should go home and test their smoke detectors and change their batteries to make sure they are working.
They talked to the students about the sacrifice that volunteer firefighters make to help the members of their communities stay safe and encouraged the students to be mindful of their unselfishness and thankful that there are individuals out there who care enough about them and their families to become a volunteer firefighter. They also answered a wide range of questions from the students from how dangerous being a firefighter is to whether or not every firefighter has a Dalmatian dog for a pet.
The firefighters came to the school in part to recognize fire prevention week which is October 17th – 21st.
