First exhibition for relocated campus gallery set Sept. 6 to Oct. 4

OSWEGO — SUNY Oswego’s Tyler Art Gallery @ Penfield Library will host its first exhibition starting Sept. 6, as the main gallery awaits its rebirth in renovated Tyler Hall about a year and half from now.

Setting the scene -- Artist Bradley Butler of Canandaigua will loan "Curiosity Obscura 2013" to SUNY Oswego's Tyler Art Gallery @ Penfield Library for "The Continuing View: Historic and Contemporary Landscape." That exhibition and a companion display, "STEM to STEAM," will run Sept. 6 through Oct. 4.
Setting the scene — Artist Bradley Butler of Canandaigua will loan “Curiosity Obscura 2013” to SUNY Oswego’s Tyler Art Gallery @ Penfield Library for “The Continuing View: Historic and Contemporary Landscape.” That exhibition and a companion display, “STEM to STEAM,” will run Sept. 6 through Oct. 4.

Running through Oct. 4 on the second floor of Penfield Library, the exhibition will feature a pair of displays.

Landscape paintings on loan from contemporary artists will share space with others from the college’s permanent collection, while SUNY Oswego students will show the marriage of science and art through microscope images.

An artists’ reception, free and open to the public, will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19, in the gallery.

“The Continuing View: Historic and Contemporary Landscape” will offer works from the 17th through 20th centuries in addition to loaned works of contemporary artists Robert Alexander of South Onondaga, Bradley Butler of Canandaigua, Paul Garland of Fair Haven, Sarah McCoubrey of Fayetteville, Gina Occhiogrosso of Troy, Sewall Oertling of Sterling and Zerbe Sodervick of Rochester.

The exhibition will also feature “STEM to STEAM,” exploring the intersection of science, nature and art at Rice Creek Field Station.

It will display images created by students of Dr. James Seago, emeritus professor of biological sciences, using new Zeiss LSM700 confocal microscopes in the Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Engineering and Innovation.

Gallery hours this year are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Though there is no admission fee, visitors without a current SUNY Oswego parking permit need to purchase a day-use permit for $1.
