Fort Ontario Commemorates 1775 British-Haudenosaunee Conference

OSWEGO – Join Fort Ontario State Historic Site on Saturday, June 21 for the 250th Commemoration of the 1775 British-Haudenosaunee Conference. The event begins at 11 a.m. at the Frances Marion Brown Theater, located on Barbara Donahue Drive near the entrance to Fort Ontario.

This event is free and open to the public and features two speakers. At 11 a.m., Ian Mumpton, interpretive programs assistant at Johnson Hall State Historic Site, presents “Stroud and Silver,” focusing on the fur trade and British diplomacy, including Guy Johnson’s tenure as the head of the British Department of Indian Affairs. At 1 p.m., Dr. Maeve Kane presents her book “Shirts Powdered Red: Haudenosaunee Gender, Trade, and Exchange across Three Centuries.”

Inside the old stone fort, there will be costumed historical interpreters, demonstrations on the fur trade at Oswego, 18th century foodways, Haudenosaunee wampum making and a corn husk doll activity for families. Join the Fort for a day of history and celebration of Haudenosaunee culture.

Fort Ontario is located at 1 E. First St., Oswego.
