Fort Ontario Hosts Elks’ Flag Retirement Ceremony on June 10

OSWEGO – The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Oswego Lodge #271, presents a free U.S. flag retirement ceremony outside the entrance of old Fort Ontario at 10 a.m. on June 10.

The public is cordially invited to turn in their worn-out flags for proper retirement by members of the Oswego Elks before the program.

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Lecturing Knight Bob Holmes and other members of the Oswego Elks will conduct the flag retirement ceremony and distribute information on the proper daily care and disposal of the colors.

The fort will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and regular admission will be charged for those wishing to tour the facility.

Fort Ontario is the site of four fortifications, three French and Indian War and two War of 1812 battles, the only Emergency Refugee Shelter for victims of the Nazi Holocaust during World War II, and was the objective of the last campaign of the Continental Army.

It is also home to the oldest lighthouse keepers’ residence in the United States, a United States Army Reserve Center, and arts, theatre, and recreational facilities and activities.

Fort Ontario State Historic Site is located at the north end of East Fourth Street in Oswego.
