FULTON – Fulton City School District students in grades four through six are moving toward a healthier lifestyle.

Chris Ells, FCSD director of health, physical education and athletics, said that is because all students at those grade levels now receive 40 minutes of physical education three times each week, as 120 weekly minutes of PE is required by the New York State Education Department.

“It’s just a great opportunity for our kids to be able to be active and meet the recommendation,” he said. “We can cover more activities and have more in-depth lessons.”

He added that physical education teachers may now accommodate various breakout sessions, health-related projects and more opportunities to create a well-rounded physical education experience at the elementary level.

FCSD made those changes, effective Sept. 5, the first day of the 2017-18 school year.
