GRANBY – Granby Elementary School fourth grade teachers recently offered their students hands-on learning experiences when the children participated in Colonial trade activities.

The team brought together local craftsmen to educate the students on carpentry, leather working, quilting, spinning, shoe-making and butter making during the annual fourth grade Colonial Trade Day.
Students listened to guest speakers share their love of the craft as they worked on the following activities: made a wooden helicopter toy, used a piece of leather to create a bookmark, helped make butter and worked together to create a paper quilt.
During the first half of the Colonial-American academic unit, students read much literature on the topic ahead of their Colonial trade research project.
Each student will select a trade of their choice to research and complete a PowerPoint presentation.
Throughout the remainder of the academic unit, the fourth graders will also learn about family, religion, roles of men and women, work and play during Colonial times.
