Granby Second Graders Collaborate with Liverpool Elementary

Second graders at Granby Elementary School practiced their reading, writing, and researching skills recently through an interactive videoconferencing project based on the story The Mitten by Jan Brett.

Granby was paired with Liverpool Elementary School for the 40-minute session.

Before seeing each other face to face via a webcam, each school came prepared with animal clues from the story.

Both schools were able to answer the question, Who Am I? based on the verbal descriptors given.

The second graders also shared their favorite parts of the book. A hit between both schools was the scene in which the mouse’s whiskers tickled the bear’s nose, causing him to sneeze.

In addition to reading the story, Granby students cut out paper mittens, and colored animals found in the story. The stories characters could be concealed inside the palm of the mitten.

The videoconference allowed Granby students to connect with others, and has inspired the schools to continue sharing their work. Students at Granby will do more animal research projects using PowerPoint and Wordle.

The collaborative project was part of a distance learning initiative between Oswego County BOCES and the Fulton City School District.
