A recent field trip had Fulton City School District students enjoying math one tasty bite at a time.

Sixth grade students at Granby Elementary School spent several weeks during the latter part of December exploring unit rates and calculating sales tax, discounts, and percentages as well as learning how these concepts apply to real world.
A field trip to Pies Guys II Pizzeria in Fulton served as the culmination for the unit and gave students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of consumer math concepts for a little slice of the pie.
Students reviewed the pizzeria’s menu and each placed an order for the lunch that they felt would give them the most bang for their buck based on their knowledge of the math concepts that were covered in the classroom.
Each student was asked to justifying their selection with some students opting to pool their money to share a whole pizza and others opting for a special slice and soda combination.
Participating in the real world field trip as well as justifying their purchase and their understanding of the math concepts counted as a performance task grade for the students.
