OSWEGO — Port City Roller Derby will hold a guest bartending fundraiser and screening of the film “Derby Baby” at sponsor Greene’s Ale House, 104 W. Bridge St., from 6 to 9 p.m. April 30.

Entering its third year of competition, Port City Roller Derby is raising money to stage its five home dates, starting May 25 in Crisafulli Rink. Rollergirls, refs and other members will serve visitors to Greene’s and can discuss this fast-growing, fast-moving sport in greater detail.
In addition, the league will host a showing of “Derby Baby,” a 95-minute documentary on the sport by Emmy-Award-winning filmmakers Robin Bond and Dave Wruck.
The film explores “the love, the pure addiction that drives tens of thousands of women around the globe to don fishnets and pseudonyms” to play the sport, according to the film synopsis.
“There’s a perfect storm of D-I-Y culture and women’s empowerment in the U.S. and around the world, so it makes sense that this latest version of roller derby would take hold of busy women and their daughters everywhere – literally everywhere,” filmmakers added.
Port City Roller Derby is produced by Oz Roller Girls Inc., a member-run non-profit organization dedicated to athletic competition, empowerment and supporting its community. PCRD always seeks skaters, refs and other volunteers for its adult (18 and over) and juniors (ages 10 to 17) teams, and will provide training.
