OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County Habitat for Humanity, (OCHFH) Executive Director Samuel Raponi recently visited the Oswego Community Christian School to share the importance of providing a safe living environment for families.
“I had the opportunity to speak to first through fourth graders on how important a safe living environment is for families, and how OCHFH organizes and builds within the community,” Raponi said. “The discussion led to the importance of natural habitats in the wild, including how birds live in trees and are sometimes provided with a pre-built habitat—like a bird house or bird feeder— to help them sustain a better life”
According to Raponi, the class was divided into groups. Each group selected a leader who delegated the task of constructing a birdhouse, bird feeder, or butterfly shelter. Each child was taught safe building practices by using safety glasses and OCHCH tool aprons to safely hold pencils, rulers, and hammers. They also reviewed plans, developed a material list and recognized the importance of open communication within each team before construction began.
“The students were great at working in teams to construct their prefabricated bird houses, bird feeders, and butterfly habitats,” Raponi said.
An achievement awards ceremony was held at the school to judge the projects and give recognition to each team.
“Many thanks to Principal David Proietti and teacher Jennifer Vrooman for inviting me to visit and share our mission of providing safe and affordable housing to families throughout Oswego County,” Raponi said.
According to Raponi, The Oswego County Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to improving the stability of families through homeownership and making our community a better more vibrant and supportive place to live.
“We are volunteers who network with others in our community to address the needs of all who need a decent place to live. We unite our connections, resources, and volunteers to build and renovate homes, to enrich the lives of those who need them and our community,” Raponi said.
