The entrepreneurship class recently wrapped up a project-based learning effort that culminated in a business pitch to a panel of potential “investors.”

In a scenario reminiscent of the TV show “Shark Tank,” students created a business idea and made their case to investors Stephen Dunn (high school principal); Colleen Dailey (music teacher); and social studies teacher Joseph Meyer.

The investors considered each business pitch and peppered the entrepreneurs with questions about profitability, necessity and demand.

Once an offer was received, students had the ability to make a counter offer or accept the original proposal in the hopes of making a great business deal.

“This project was in-depth and covered so many subjects and skills,” said teacher Roseann Inzalaco. “The students developed their public speaking skills, they had to analyze the investors’ offers and think on their feet.”

Inzalaco said the project also incorporated cross-curricular learning.

Teachers of several core subjects pushed into the class, discussing topics such as clean energy, cost savings, supply and demand, and profitability.

As part of the lesson, students wrote business plans, created commercials, developed logos and met with local business owners to gain a better understanding of what it takes to run a company.

They visited Travis Floral Shop and Kim’s Village Café where they learned about customer service, establishing a positive reputation and how to be successful.

“These local business owners not only answered all of the students’ questions, but they donated samples of their products to the students,” Inzalaco said. “The class is very appreciative of the time these business owners took to give them real-world advice about owning a business, and that knowledge showed during the ‘Shark Tank’ presentations.”
