Hannibal Free Library has been selected as a data recorder for NASA’s Eclipse Soundscapes Project. Library staff will be recording the behavior of animals for 5 days (April 6-10) and sending the data back to NASA.
The Eclipse Soundscapes Project is a NASA Citizen Science project funded by NASA Science Activation that is studying how eclipses affect life on Earth during the October 14, 2023 annular solar eclipse and the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse. Eclipse Soundscapes will revisit an eclipse study from almost 100 years ago that showed that animals and insects are affected by solar eclipses.
Hannibal Library Director Shelly Stanton says, “I have always been fascinated with eclipses, so when I learned that I was going to be able to experience one in totality, I started finding out what I could do, and jumped at the chance to actually participate as an observer and data collector.”
Public libraries across the North Country will be celebrating the Great North American Eclipse by hosting eclipse-themed events between March 1 and April 15, 2024. Libraries are also distributing free eclipse glasses to the public, while supplies last.
