OSWEGO – On June 6, the YMCA organization turns 175 years old.

The first YMCA was founded in London, England, in 1844 by young people who were determined to address the social challenges impacting their community.

Today, as one of the largest nonprofits in the world serving 58 million people in 119 countries, the Y continues to bring people from all walks of life together to create a better community and a better world for all.

To help celebrate this milestone birthday, the Oswego YMCA will be celebrating its member through out the month of June.

Each time a member signs in at the Oswego YMCA Welcome Center during the month of June they will be automatically registered for a chance to win a weekly give-away.

Membership appreciation month will kick off on June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Oswego YMCA Welcome Center with a cake cutting to celebrate the YMCA organization’s 175th birthday.

The Oswego YMCA was founded in 1855 on West Second Street.

Its current facility was constructed in 1903.

The YMCA acquired the Armory in 2010 and continues to utilize the building to expand services and wellness programs to the Oswego community.

The Y is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

With more than 1,600 members, one in nine people living in the Oswego community is a member of Oswego YMCA.

Daily, youth, adults and families find the support and services they need to improve their quality of life.

The Oswego YMCA serves as a community resource providing programs including a variety of aquatics programs and swim lessons, youth, adult and family fitness, active older adult with silver and fit and silver sneakers opportunities, school age childcare, summer camp, parents’ night out and many parent and child programs.
