PULASKI – At the conclusion of a senior year filled with uncertainty, graduating seniors at Pulaski Academy and Central School have been shown a ray of hope and a demonstration of generosity from a growing business right in their own community.
Each of the 85 graduates have been awarded a $250 scholarship by Heathway Family of Brands and the Lobdell family, a Pulaski based manufacturer of air filtration equipment.
Offered as an incentive to encourage the students to go out and do great things in life after high school, the funds are a way to show the young people that the community believes in them.
“Our business has seen significant growth during the coronavirus pandemic, and we see this as a way to give back to the community,” said Healthway Family of Brands Global President Vinny Lobdell.
Healthway Family of Brands has been providing effective technology to improve indoor air quality for over 30 years. Air purification products are being installed and used locally, such as at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse and in many other locations across Central New York and worldwide, in countries such as Mexico, Bermuda and Ecuador.
“This pandemic has created lots of uncertainty and a weak job market, so we thought who better to give this gift to than the next generation of leaders,” Lobdell said.
High school seniors in Pulaski and across the country have seen many of the traditions of graduation disappear this year, leaving them with a sense of loss.
PACS seniors have received t-shirts and have placed yard signs in front of their homes, but these gestures do not completely replace the social activities traditionally celebrated at this time of the school year.
PACS officials recently met with representatives of the Healthway Family of Brands to finalize the details of the donation, and students learned of the gift via a youTube video. The video may be viewed here[1].
In another generous act, Healthway Family of Brands has arranged for the names and photos of all 85 graduates to be displayed on the marquee of the Kallet theatre in Pulaski. Everyone traveling Pulaski’s busiest therefore will be able to view a full color photo of each senior as they pass by the recently restored theater.
“What an extraordinary gesture. Pulaski as a community takes a lot of pride in the ways that we support one another,” said Pulaski Academy and Central Schools Superintendent Thomas Jennings. “The Lobdell family and the many ways that they support the community is an excellent example of this.”
As in other school districts nationwide, PACS has been exploring ways to improve the situation for students faced with the quarantine.
“We have been trying as a school to give them something to smile about,” Jennings said.
As the Class of 2020 celebrates graduation with a parade through the village on June 19, the newly diplomaed seniors will have a little something extra to remember about this special time in their lives.
Reflecting on this extraordinary time and the generosity of the Healthway Family of Companies, Superintendent Jennings said, “I think also, it demonstrates for our kids that it isn’t just your parents, friends, teachers, coaches and administrators rooting for you, it’s your whole community. And they need to hear that now.”
