OSWEGO, NY – Recently there was an “APB” (all points bulletin) issued by Frederick Leighton Elementary School fifth grade teacher Tom Wiegand.

Wiegand issued the “APB” for “missing wax statues.”
Annually Wiegand takes a very creative approach to enhance his students’ educational experiences.
Wiegand had brought excitement to learning and without the students even realizing it he covers social studies, technology, and English Language Arts areas of reading and writing.
This year, as visitors arrived at “the warehouse’ to view the statues greeting them at the door was ‘officer’ Wiegand.
The veteran teacher said, “This is the 11th year of the wax museum. The students always amaze me with their depiction of their character. They were required to write a biographical essay using a Document Based Questioning format charts and a DBQ writing structure. They then had to determine key details to display in front of their character. It is a lot of work, but the students see the results of it and are excited to show what they have done.”
Once again his student rose to the occasion as they displayed tremendous self-control remaining nearly completely motionless throughout the lengthy periods as they were viewed by students from throughout the school, parents, teachers and staff members.
There were many news “persons” in this exhibit as students displayed a variety of interests.

The roster of guests included: Jackie Robinson (Sam Allen), Theodore Roosevelt (Aaron Carter), Sacajawea (Alyssa Cheeley), Julius Caesar (Robert Clark), Sir Isaac Newton (Dominick Cullen), Jane Goodall (Mackenzie Endres), Alfred Hitchcock (Cameron Garafolo), Neil Armstrong (Jacob Gibbs), Susan B. Anthony (Amber Hammond), Queen Ester (Abigail Hoffman), Cleopatra (Tatyana Jimenez), Molly Pitcher (Harmony Kryger), Charles Lindberg (Carson Martin), Oprah Winfrey (Montana Myhill), Steve Jobs (Dylan Reitz), Queen Isabella (Madison Roach), Les Paul (Javen Skye) and Alexander Graham Bell (Alex Whiteside).
As always the students gain a genuine learning experience by becoming immersed in a historical character.
