The students at Lanigan Elementary School participated in an assembly recently to celebrate the start of a successful new school year and to review the PBIS (Positive Behaviors and Interventions Supports) initiative and the school’s four behavioral expectations: be respectful, be responsible, be safe, and be a problem solver.
Lanigan Principal Bob Briggs and school psychologist Carlo Cuccaro also spent some time during the assembly speaking to students about “filling their buckets.”
The concept of “bucket filling” is based on the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud.

It’s a metaphor to help students understand the impact that their words and behaviors can have others and how rewarding it can be to express kindness and appreciation or to be considerate of others.
Giving a demonstration of “bucket filling” for the school during the assembly were fourth grade students Brasen Jodway, Makayla Kitts, Ian Summerville, and Emily Stacy.
Each gave an example of a way to fill someone’s bucket, a thoughtful gesture or a kind word, and were rewarded much to the audience’s surprise by physical education teacher Kip Harvey who was disguised as a “bucket filling” helper.
Though quite humorous, the scenarios and the idea of a “bucket filling” helper, especially one dressed in a wig and carrying a magic wand, was to get students to think about their buckets and decide to start each school day as a “bucket filler.”
