Lanigan Elementary second graders embraced this month’s character education trait of empathy while on a shopping trip at their neighborhood Tops.

The students collected pledges over Thanksgiving break for every problem answered correctly on their 100-problem math facts test.
A large portion of the $2,000 raised was spent purchasing food and personal care items for Lanigan families in need.
Some funds will be used to buy gift certificates for other charities and future second grade activities.

During the shopping trip, math lessons continued as students split into small groups in charge of purchasing items for breakfast, lunch, dinner and personal care items.
Group members worked together with a budget, compared prices and added or subtracted prices to stay on budget.
Students also discussed healthy food options.
