Lanigan students participate in a shopping trip for those less fortunate

Second graders at Lanigan Elementary School held a math-a-thon recently to earn money to buy food for needy families in the Fulton area.
Through pledges, students were able to raise $2,000, part of which was used during a shopping trip to Struppler’s Shurfine Supermarket.
On Dec. 17, one by one classes were bused to the local grocery store. Each second grader was given $10 to spend on non-perishable items in the store.
Small groups split up with their carts, searching aisle by aisle for just the right items to create a healthy meal. With the help of their chaperones, students kept track of their running totals while shopping to ensure they were within budget.
Students looked at prices on the shelves to see if they were getting the most bang for their buck.
They quickly found that by selecting store brand items, their $10 could stretch further.
After they had finished shopping and had checked out at the registers, they carried their bags of groceries to a waiting Catholic Charities’ van in the parking lot.
The food generously donated by Lanigan will benefit Catholic Charities’ food baskets this holiday season.
The trip to Struppler’s was a win-win for all, a local grocer was patronized, students learned an important lesson in giving and their donations will feed the hungry in the community.
