FULTON – Friends of Recovery Oswego County has welcomed Laura Engle as its newest board member.
A native of Oswego and graduate of SUNY Oswego, Engle earned a B.S. degree in accounting. Having previously worked as a wealth management advisor with Northwest Mutual, and client service coordinator with Harmony Financial, Engle is currently a private wealth advisor with Grow Wealth Partners in Phoenix.
Engle learned of Friends of Recovery Oswego County (FOROC) through her life-long friend and FOROC Board President Ellen Lazarek.
“Having a family member that is deep in addiction struggle, the efforts of FOROC and the support it provides for those in recovery resonated with me,” said Engle. “When Ellen explained FOROC’s mission and the impact is has on individuals on their road to recovery from substance use disorder I knew I wanted to be involved. Being an active board member for FOROC gives me the opportunity to give back to the community.”
As treasurer, Engle will oversee the agency’s finances and budgeting and will be involved in decisions regarding policy, procedures, and grant writing. Only having been a board member for short time, Engle is impressed with the scope of FOROC and the role that its Fulton Community Outreach Center plays in people’s road to recovery.
“Those struggling with recovery from substance use disorder can often be ignored,” said Engle. “Idle time and having no one to listen to them is one of the hardest things they have to deal with. The FOROC Community Outreach Center successfully addresses both of those issues. It’s wonderful that it offers attendees the opportunity to connect with others, participate in a variety of activities, and visit with those that are willing to listen to them and treat them in a kind and respectful manner. The support, activities, and guidance that FOROC offers are fantastic! Being a FOROC board member promises to be very rewarding experience. I am looking forward to learning as much as I can about FOROC and supporting its efforts anyway I can.”
“Laura is an avid supporter of FOROC, said Executive Director Virginia Bough. “She volunteers at many of our events and visits our Recovery Outreach Center often. Laura’s extensive financial background and her experience in relating to someone who is struggling with substance use disorder, makes Laura a perfect fit for our board of directors.”
Bough added that FOROC is currently seeking additional board members that truly care about the agency’s mission. “We would ideally like to add medical professionals, individuals with grant writing experience, and those that can identify with family members, or are in long-term recovery.”
Friends of Recovery Oswego County’s Community Outreach Center is a safe, welcoming space for mindfulness, personal reflection, and connection to community. It is open to all and its staff provides support to persons of all ages impacted by substance use disorder, be it those using or recovering, family members or friends.
“We strive to end the stigma of substance use disorder and offer a wide range of services including peer to peer recovery advocacy, technology and internet access for participants use for telehealth, job and housing searches, and educational pursuits,” said Bough. “We are very person centered. We meet people where they are at and support then regardless of the path to recovery they choose. When they are ready to begin their journey to recovery we will be there to support them.”
Located in Fulton at 808 West Broadway, Suite #3, Friends of Recovery Oswego County’s Recovery Community Center is open Mondays and Tuesdays 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
