OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego County Legislature recognized October 15 as National White Cane Safety Day at its October meeting.

This recognition promotes awareness, education and advocacy for issues that affect individuals with a vision impairment which requires them to carry a white cane.
One such issue is pedestrian safety and drivers are reminded to be aware of pedestrians with metallic, white and red-tipped canes as they approach intersections and cross-walks and to yield the right-of-way to them.
Additional improvements have come to intersections of both east and west First streets with Bridge Street.
Vehicles are no longer permitted to turn right on red, pedestrian cross time has been lengthened to 24 seconds, and two audible pedestrian signals (APS) were added to these crossings.
Members of ARISE were at hand for the presentation with the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee.
