OSWEGO, NY – The Frederick Elementary School will be well represented at the Oswego County “Battle of the Books” on March 22 as the primary and intermediate teams captured district honors at the Oswego High School Robinson-Faust Theatre for the Performing Arts on March 3.

Meanwhile, a trio of Oswego Middle School students will also be vying for the county honors later this month.
The Primary category consists of third and fourth graders and the Leighton team of Anna Cloonan, Gavin Mills and Harrison Zuber scored 88 points to finish ahead of Kingsford Park (72), Minetto, Charles E. Riley and Fitzhugh Park teams.
Intermediate winners, representing fifth and sixth grades, included the Leighton trio of Ava Cloonan, Gretchen Dowd and Kyle Familo.
The Leighton team scored 80 points and was followed by Kingsford Park (72), Charles E. Riley, Fitzhugh Park and Minetto elementary schools.
The Oswego Middle School team edged four others in competition and included Dakota Contryman, Shae Carter and Tessa Smith.

The annual Oswego “Battle of the Books” was organized by district librarians Mary Alice Brunell, Molly Clark, Gina Iorio, Kim LeRoy, Debbie McHugh, Jeremy Shanly and Serena Waldron.
A panel including Superintendent of Schools Benjamin Halsey, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Cathy Chamberlain and Director of Liberty Laura Ryder provided the questions to the competitors.
Teams had advanced to the Oswego High School competition from school qualifying rounds.
Representing the primary grades from Fitzhugh Park were Jasmine McCracken, Katelyn Nettles and Zachary Kinney-Steinberg while from Kingsford were Michael Fierro, Evan Rando and Blake Uribe. Olivia Griffiths, Olivia Powers and Teagan Ross wore the Charles E. Riley colors while on stage for Minetto were Brayden Miller, Andrew Mullen and Connor Wallace.

Fifth and sixth graders participating included Jack Anzalone, Conner Mulcahey and McKenzie Westberry of Fitzhugh; Katie Fierro, Caitie Lilly and Julie Roman from Kingsford; Alexandria Delfino, Molly Fitzgibbons and Miranda Gilbert of Charles E. Riley and the trio of Annamarie Guarrera, Morgan Samson and Ashley St. John from Minetto.
Middle school students participating comprised five teams and along with the winning trio were Jade Ballard, Rose Huang, Brianna Bush, Julianne Verceles, Sophia Griffiths, Crystal King, Alaina McMahon, Danielle DelConte, Jessie Godden, Laurel Plunkett and Tiffany Ditton.
The annual “Battle of the Books” continues to be quite popular among Oswego students and each year they look forward to the challenge.
