OSWEGO – The Oswego County Office for the Aging observed Older Americans Month with the theme “Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow.”

This annual recognition began in 1963 in communities across the county and this year’s theme focuses on injury prevention and safety, and encourages older adults to protect themselves and remain active and independent for as long as possible.
Sara Sunday, administrator of the Oswego County Office for the Aging said, “Older adults have made countless contributions and sacrifices to ensure a better life for future generations. This is an opportunity for us to recognize them for their actions and show our gratitude and commitment to helping them stay healthy and active.”
Unintentional injuries to this portion of the population result in more than six million medically-treated injuries and more than 30,000 deaths every year.

With an emphasis on safety during Older Americans Month, the Oswego County Office for the Aging encourages older adults to learn about the many ways they can avoid the leading causes of injury, including falls.
This year, special recognition goes to RSVP volunteer Rachel Brooks and Home Delivered Meals volunteer Daniel Mathews.
Sunday said, “We would like to congratulate Rachel and Dan on this accomplishment and thank them for all that they do, tirelessly, to help enhance the lives of seniors across Oswego County. Their commitment to themselves to remain active and help their peers has also been recognized by the New York State Office for the Aging.”
