Maroun Creates Gift Packages To Aid Children In Need

Students, staff and parents at Maroun Elementary School recently pitched in to create more than 100 care packages for homeless children in the United States, aiding the efforts of the Project Night Night organization.

Project Night Night, a nonprofit organization based out of San Francisco, Calf., donates more than 25,000 “Night Night Packages” each year, free of charge, to homeless children in need of childhood essentials.

Each package contains a blanket, an age-appropriate children’s book, a stuffed animal and a tooth brush. The packages are designed to comfort children up to the age of 12 who have rarely received gifts due to difficult times.

With that in mind, Maroun staff and students began collecting the essentials necessary to create the packages. Once the materials were collected, third grade students gathered in the school’s cafeteria to assemble the packages to be delivered.

Four National Honor Society members from John C. Birdlebough High School also stopped by to assist in making of the packages, creating comradery throughout the district and showcasing the importance of the event.

“I am proud of the heart of Maroun Elementary staff, students and parents,” said Principal Mary Stanton. “Each year our heart grows to reach more and more people who need love, comfort and reassurance during difficult times. Service learning is an important part of our school.”

Altogether, Maroun students created 140 packages for Project Night Night, far exceeding the expectation of guidance counselor Nora Germain, who helped organized the effort.

“We are extremely proud of the Phoenix students, their parents and the Phoenix staff for their incredible generosity in donating so many blankets, stuffed animals and books. We far exceeded our goal of creating 100 bags,” Germain said.

The packages created at Maroun Elementary will be delivered to the Vera House in Syracuse, Oswego County Opportunities, the Red Cross and Catholic Charities in Fulton.
