That occurred in the students’ technology class with teacher David Wilcox, who presented the students with a foot orthosis instant design challenge.

The Project Lead the Way activity allowed students to delve into an engineering mindset to design, test and build a model solution for patients with cerebral palsy.

Wilcox said information the seventh graders had to keep in mind included an example patient’s foot bent down and a device needed to be created to keep the foot flat as they walk or help them work toward that point.

An initial introduction to drawing sketches, Wilcox said the project included the creation of prototypes that were created with provided materials.

Students presented to their classmates in groups and shared processes before they offered their reflections.

The activity served as a precursor to a design and drawing unit.
