Mexico Spanish Class Bake Sweet Treats

MEXICO – Learning is fun in Diane Bush’s Spanish 5 class at Mexico High School.

The students recently studied about the Day of the Dead in various South American countries and learned the annual event on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 is a cultural tradition to remember and celebrate the lives of lost loved ones.

Students read about Tantawawas, or sweet bread figurines of babies that are a tradition in Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru.

The traditional sweets, sometimes made with cinnamon, are made to honor children of people in those cultures who have died.

Bush’s students followed a recipe – in Spanish – to make them while they practiced socializing and conversing in Spanish, utilizing new vocabulary and structures as they worked.
