National Walk To School Day Celebrated At Riley

OSWEGO – Dozens of students took to the streets surrounding Charles E. Riley Elementary School on Wednesday morning, participating in National Walk to School Day to promote traffic and pedestrian safety and healthy habits.
The event was coordinated as a partnership between Riley staff and faculty, the Oswego City School District, the Oswego County Health Department, the Oswego County Traffic Safety Board and Tobacco Free CNY.
Walkers were assisted on their routes by members of the city of Oswego Police and Fire departments, who helped direct traffic, hand out school supplies, and interact with a crowd that grew to more than 100 people eagerly awaiting the opening of the elementary school for the day.
Jessica McGiff of the Traffic Safety Board said the event was designed to encourage children, parents and families to exercise, practice healthy behaviors and “get up and move,” and praised the “community engagement” in the city that helps create a safe environment for students to be able to walk to school.
District officials said they hoped the success of Wednesday’s event would inspire more students and families to walk to school and expected the event to grow in coming years.
