Never Mail an Elephant: Author Thaler Reads to Fairgrieve Students

Mike Thaler, the author of the popular “Teacher from the Black Lagoon” series, visited Fairgrieve Elementary recently.

Thaler read stories like “A Hippopotamus Ate the Teacher” and “Never Mail an Elephant” to individual classes, asking questions that stretched their imaginations along the way.

“Now, you can’t really buy an elephant from the zoo, can you?” asked Thaler. “But in a story, your imagination can make anything happen. That’s why it’s great to write your own stories!”

After Thaler read “Never Mail an Elephant,” he challenged the students to come up with other animals that shouldn’t be sent through the mail that they could write their own stories about.

The kids developed ideas for never mailing a dinosaur, never mailing an alligator and never mailing a bear.

“These are all great ideas,” said Thaler. “Remember, you are all authors and you could all write your own stories.”

Each child received their own bookmark from Thaler, and six students from each class were randomly selected to receive an autographed book.
