OSWEGO, NY – The Gardens Assisted Living Community in Oswego recently welcomed one of the area’s best kept musical secrets, The Oswego County Chapter New Horizons Chorus.

Part of New Horizons International Music Association, the Oswego chapter boasts a chorus of 45 members as well as a band and a full orchestra.
Established at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, the New Horizons Music program was designed to provide adults age 55 and older the opportunity to make music.
“Many of our members enjoyed playing and singing in school bands and choruses but never had the chance to continue making music with others. New Horizons gives them a chance to once again experience the joy of making music with a group. New Horizons also welcomes adults that have never been involved with music and allows them the opportunity to learn an instrument or discover that they do have a talent for singing,” said Susan Comerford, assistant director of the New Horizons Chorus. “Research as has shown that the challenge of learning music is an ideal form of exercise for our brains. Participation in New Horizons also offers the opportunity to forge new friendships and gives our members events to look forward to.”
New Horizons chorus, band, and orchestra has performed throughout Oswego County at a variety of venues including adult residences, nursing homes, retirement banquets, church festivals and Oswego’s Harborfest.
“We love to share our music and are happy to entertain any group or organization that would like to host us. Our performances are free of charge, but we do accept donations,” said New Horizons member Jeanette Heath.
“The New Horizons chorus is a great addition to our entertainment schedule,” said Jill Little, activities director at The Gardens. “We offer our residents a wide variety of entertainment and activities but this was the first time we’ve hosted a group of this size. Our residents enjoyed the performance and are looking forward to the groups return.”
Heath added that the New Horizons Chorus practices Tuesday mornings and the New Horizons Band and Orchestra practices Wednesday mornings at the United Methodist Church, 2433 County Route 8 in Minetto.
“All are welcome. Stop in and find out how you can become a member of New Horizons!” said Heath.
Located at 132 Ellen St., The Gardens is a 106-bed assisted living community that provides an active living community and promotes independence while offering the support services necessary to assist individuals with health care need 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
