OSWEGO COUNTY – Students in Sandy Creek Central School’s Start Vocational class recently embraced the fall season by creating beautifully crafted wood décor pumpkins. The project, led by teachers Marissa Paquin and Christopher Conway, is part of a new dual home, careers, and technology class aimed at building essential life skills.

“The purpose of this class is for students to gain everyday real-world skills,” said Conway. “We work together to teach them how to do crafts, work with their hands, fix household items, cook and more.”

The pumpkin décor project took approximately two weeks to complete, beginning with design work on a computer. The designs were then cut out using a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. Students finished the projects by following specific instructions to paint their pumpkins, adding a personalized touch to each piece.

“This is the first year for the class, and it has already been a success,” Conway noted, highlighting the enthusiasm and hands-on learning experience the students have gained from the program.
