FULTON – Oswego County Workforce New York has created a training program for candidates interested in helping people with disabilities in their daily living needs in response to a local need for direct support professionals.
“We are looking for motivated candidates to begin training for a new and fulfilling career,” said Michelle Smith, employment advisor with OCWNY. “This is an excellent opportunity to utilize the Metrix E-Learning System, an on-line learning tool, to help them get started and we’ve developed a comprehensive curriculum to meet the needs of the employers.”
Smith added, “OCWNY tailored this program with help from local organizations including ARC of Oswego County, ARISE, Oswego Industries, and Oswego County Opportunities. We also have staff available at the center to help applicants with additional job readiness issues such as interviewing skills, transportation and child care needs.”
The program covers a variety of topics from basic resident care, first aid and nutrition to human anatomy, infections and communicable diseases.
There are also classes to help students better understand the aging process, diabetes, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Participants will learn how to identify and prevent abuse and neglect, manage reportable incidents, the fundamental rights of individuals, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Additional classes include professional writing and communication skills, safe lifting, defensive driving, and fire safety.
Students will complete the program through a combination of training performed both at home and at the Career Center in the Oswego County Office Building at 200 N. Second St. in Fulton.
Candidates for this program should have a high school diploma or equivalency, a clean driver’s license, and be able to pass the required background check.
Scholarships are available through OCWNY to cover the cost of tuition.
