FULTON – OCO Nutrition Services hosted an Open House on Wednesday, March 25, at its kitchen located at 5871 Scenic Avenue in Mexico, as part of the national March for Meals campaign with Meals on Wheels of America.
The event welcomed nearly 50 community members, partners, and local officials, offering attendees an inside look at the organization’s meal preparation and delivery operations. Guests participated in a guided tour featuring seven interactive stations, each highlighting a key step in the process, from receiving food shipments to meal preparation, cooking, packaging, and final distribution.
“March for Meals is an important campaign at both the national and local levels, as raising awareness about senior hunger remains critical in our communities and across the country,” said Program Coordinator for OCO Nutrition Services Lori Halstead. “This event provided an opportunity to both advocate and educate, while showcasing how we work together to support those in need.”
Attendees met with program staff and received informational materials about available services. Food samples, including macaroni and cheese, chicken salad, and fresh baked cookies were provided.
Members of the Oswego County Legislature were in attendance, along with representatives from the Office for the Aging and a liaison from Senator Ryan’s office. Their participation highlighted the ongoing importance of collaboration in addressing food insecurity among older adults.
Aging Services Administrator with the Oswego County Office for the Aging Sara Sunday said the mission of the Oswego County Office is to assist older adults to remain in the community at the highest level of independence for as long as possible, in safety and with dignity.
“One of the most important ways we work with older people to address our mission is by providing home delivered meals to seniors. Additionally, the daily check in that is part of the meals program keeps our older residents connected to the community and lets them know they are not alone. The recent Open House event was a terrific way to see how all the moving parts work together to provide so many daily meals. Working with OCO Nutrition Services providing home delivered and congregate dining meals has been a great partnership for decades and we look forward to continuing cooperative efforts,” said Sunday.
OCO Nutrition Services continues to play a vital role in supporting community members through its nutrition programs, working in partnership with local and national organizations to address senior hunger.
Administered through OCO’s Nutrition Services and funded in part through Oswego County Office for the Aging, and the New York State Office for the Aging, OCO’s Home Delivered Meals program delivers more than 1,000 meals each day and provides nutritious meals to homebound seniors and consumers at its Dining and Activity Centers throughout Oswego County.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of OCO serving the community. Throughout the year OCO will celebrate its long history, its founders and supporters. OCO, 60 years of action, a lifetime of impact!
