Oswego County EMC Announces Earth Week Activities

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego County Environmental Management Council will observe Earth Week throughout Oswego County from April 22 through 28.

Individuals, families and organizations are encouraged to participate in a litter and debris cleanup in their community.

“Since the original Earth Day was celebrated in the United States on April 22, 1970, that date has become a worldwide day for individuals, groups, schools and organizations to demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Tim Carroll, EMC president and Earth Week coordinator.

In 2005, the EMC sponsored its first proclamation in the County Legislature to designate Earth Week in Oswego County.

“Our purpose has always been to encourage local residents to participate in Earth Week cleanups and other events and to proudly accept responsibility for their part in securing a safer, healthier environment for future generations,” said Carroll.  “Our theme this year is ‘Trash?  How long does it really last?’ ”

Anyone can participate in Earth Week.

In order to support local residents in their efforts, the EMC will provide trash bags, work gloves and safety vests for those who need them.

These supplies were made available through donations from Entergy Nuclear, Exelon Corporation and Novelis.

“We would like to recognize everyone who participates and we encourage all groups to send us pictures of their efforts,” said Carroll. “We also invite everyone to post their photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram along with the hash tag #OswegoCountyEarthWeek.”
