Oswego County Falls Prevention Coalition Has Your Back!

FULTON – The Oswego County Falls Prevention Coalition “has your back” if you are a senior (or caring for a senior) who has experienced a fall or is at risk of falling.

The coalition has information on programs to improve balance, identify proactive measures, and increase your confidence in falls prevention.

It serves Oswego County residents by providing information on services that are available in the community to help prevent falls and increase balance.

Did we mention these services are free?!

According to the National Council on Aging every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. There are services in Oswego County to assist seniors in not being part of that statistic, free of charge. One of the most commonly identified factors contributing to falls as we age is a loss of muscle strength and decreased balance.

There are several programs offered in the county to address these concerns, including:

Fall Prevention Programs Available in Oswego County

• Stepping On – Stepping On is a 7 week evidence based program designed for anyone 60 years or older, with a history of falls or is at risk of a fall, and lives at home. In addition to strength and balance exercises the program also addresses issues that relate to falls such as medication management, vision deficits, environmental modifications and potential home hazards, weather conditions, and proper footwear. • Tai Chi: Moving For Better Balance – Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance is a 12 week evidence based program that focuses on balance and physical function by practicing weight shifting, postural alignment, and smooth coordinated movements. • Six Steps to Better Balance – Six Steps to Better Balance is a six-step approach to better balance that focuses on preventing falls by practicing fun repetitive movements and simple exercises.
