Oswego County Habitat for Humanity is reaching out to race fans on July 19 at Oswego Speedway to share information and raise funding for their programs,” said Samuel Raponi, OCHFH executive director. In 2002, Oswego County Habitat for Humanity, Inc., constructed a new home for Charmaine LaLiveres and her family, thanks to the dedication of community volunteers and employees from Alcan. Friends and family members were able to donate their time, which ensured a safe and affordable home for Charmaine and her children. In May of 2024, Charmaine proudly paid off her mortgage. Celebrating this achievement with her are from left: Raponi, OCHFH Board Chair Jissell Jimenez, LaLiveres, and former board member Dean Wright. In the back is past AmeriCorps member Rachel Hendricks.
OSWEGO, NY – Oswego County Habitat for Humanity is reaching out to race fans on July 19 at Oswego Speedway to share information and raise funds for their programs, said Samuel Raponi, OCHFH executive director.
“ Habitat will have display tables to provide program information, sell raffle tickets for our fundraising efforts to help continue our mission of offering safe and affordable housing throughout Oswego County, “ Raponi said. “We will share corporate sponsorship opportunities for local businesses, highlighting the benefits of their support and fostering community partnerships. We’re also seeking new board members to share in the satisfaction of helping those we serve. We’ll encourage attendees to share their thoughts on Habitat for Humanity and build strong connections within our community. We’ll also share information on our first-time home buyer program, as well as our Aging In Place program.”
Habitat encourages those with an interest and desire to become a homeowner to reach out to them for guidance and support through their first-time home buyer program, Raponi said. “Families in this program are able to strengthen their financial obligations, invest sweat equity hours during the construction phase, and provide the necessary community resources to ensure that personal goals will be achieved and make the dream of homeownership a reality. Strong and stable homes build strong and stable communities. In addition, better, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, self-reliance, stronger childhood development and the ability—and financial flexibility— to make forward-looking choices.”
In 2002, Charmaine LaLiveres was able to achieve the dream of first-time home ownership with OCHFH as a partner family: “Being a first-time homeowner working with the Selection Committee from Oswego County Habitat for Humanity, my experience went from nervousness and apprehension to an exciting, rewarding adventure.
“All the volunteers worked tirelessly and with extreme patience in teaching me all the facets of home ownership and construction fundamentals. With the group’s help, my home was completed in September 2002, and I still reside here today, 23 years later. Anyone lucky enough to be accepted into the Habitat for Humanity home build project won’t be disappointed. Hopefully, you will be as happy as I have been for many years past and many more years to come.”
Habitat’s Aging In Place (AIP) program is successfully helping older adults “stay in their homes and the communities they love,” Raponi said. “It’s been projected that, over the next 20 years, households led by individuals in their 80s will become the fastest growing age group, which provides stability within their communities.
“Through the AIP program, we collaborate with families, communities, and local organizations to provide products and services that provide livable homes for older adults,” Raponi said. “This ultimately enhances their quality of life. We employ two different assessments in each case to ensure that the homeowners’ needs are clearly understood.”
According to Raponi, Habitat is dedicated to partnering with individuals from all walks of life to develop communities for those in need by constructing and renovating homes. “We are committed to pursuing housing equity because equity and inclusion are essential for a thriving community. This approach significantly impacts children by improving their education, health, behavior, and overall well-being. Parents who own their own homes also invest more in their kids’ education, creating study spaces, providing learning materials, and staying involved in school activities. This often leads to higher expectations and aspirations for their children’s academic achievements.”
Oswego County Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization working with local families needing affordable homes with a vision where everyone has a decent place to live, building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
“Our Mission,” Raponi said, “is to ensure that there are decent houses throughout our community in which every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all God intends.”
