Oswego County Opportunities, Friends of Fulton Parks to Host Lake Neatahwanta Nature Trail Walk

FULTON, NY – Oswego County Opportunities IMPACT program in collaboration with Friends of Fulton Parks (FoFP) invites you to join them September 16 from noon to 2 p.m. at Bullhead Point for a walk along the Lake Neatahwanta Nature Trail.

The 1.7-mile scenic lakeside trail is one of the ongoing projects of Friends of Fulton Parks as they work to restore and beautify Fulton’s public parks.

The Lake Neatahwanta Nature Trail encompasses the north and eastern shoreline of the lake.

The trail begins on Phillips Street near Lakeview Lanes, and runs south past North Bay Campgrounds, with an easy walk through wooded areas to experience many species of birds and plants.

The trail opens up at Bullhead Point, hugging the shoreline through Recreation Park’s new “Teen Haven” playground, which is currently under construction, and continues along the open lakefront at CCW Barrett Drive, to the Stevenson Beach area.

From that point the trail becomes a moderately difficult hike as it weaves through the wooded marsh lakeshore to the Fulton Junior High School.

“Collaborating with Friends of Fulton Parks is a natural fit for our IMPACT program,” said program manager Kyleigh Kinney. “Kelley and the Friends of Fulton Parks volunteers have done a great job establishing the Lake Neatahwanta Nature Trail. I invite community members to join us for a leisurely walk and enjoy an outdoor activity that the whole family can enjoy. It’s a great way to enjoy outdoor exercise and the beauty of nature, while discovering the many sites along the trail. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a day by the lake!”

Established with funding through the New York Department of Health, OCO’s IMPACT program is focused on the prevention of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Through IMPACT OCO is seeking to expand opportunities to be physically active and to improve access to healthy foods.

“We are pleased to partner with OCO’s IMPACT program on this project to encourage outdoor healthy physical activity. The trail is one of the hidden treasures of Fulton, and is enjoyed daily by many residents. It was created years ago by the city of Fulton, and we are working with the Parks Department to restore it” said Friends of Fulton Parks President Kelley Weaver.

In addition to the walk there will be children’s activities and games, educational demonstrations for all ages by the Department of Environmental Conservation, a scavenger hunt, drawings for commemorative cinch bags, and the Oswego County Health Department’s “Smoothie Bike.”

Participants can also be on the lookout for hand painted rocks courtesy of Fulton NY Rocks that will be placed along the trail. Those finding the rocks are encouraged to post a “selfie” with the rock on the Fulton NY Rocks Facebook page before hiding the rock in a different location.

Friends of Fulton Parks is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit volunteer organization. Its mission is to preserve and revitalize Fulton’s parks through collaborative restoration and community events in the parks.
