OSWEGO — In recognition of National Falls Prevention Awareness Day the Oswego County Senior Fair returns on Tuesday, September 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Lake Ontario Conference and Events Center. This free, county-wide event is hosted by the Caring Community Advocates of Oswego County, a subcommittee of Oswego County Opportunities (OCO)’s Rural Health Network, in partnership with State Senator Christopher J. Ryan, Oswego Health and the Oswego County Prevention Coalition.
The fair is designed to support the health, safety, and independence of older adults and their caregivers, bringing together over 50 exhibitors from across the region to provide vital information and access to community resources. This year, the event places an emphasis on falls prevention, a timely topic affecting thousands of seniors each year.
According to the CDC, 1 in 4 Americans aged 65 and older falls each year, and falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults. Fortunately, falls are largely preventable through education, screening, and small changes to home and health routines.
Senator Ryan emphasized the importance of community-based prevention efforts: “I’m really proud to support the Oswego County Senior Fair this year. It’s a great event that brings together helpful resources, screenings, and expert advice—all in one place—for our older neighbors and their families. Falls are a serious issue, but the good news is there are simple things we can all do to stay safer. This fair is about giving people the tools and information they need to stay healthy, independent, and connected.”
A key feature of this year’s event will be free balance screenings and fall risk assessments provided by CenterWell Home Health, aimed at helping older adults identify their personal risk factors and learn simple steps to stay steady and safe.
“So many of the older adults we serve are surprised to learn that small changes, like simple home modifications or improving lighting, can significantly reduce their risk of falling,” said Caring Community Advocate Chairperson and Home Health Specialist with CenterWell Home Health Jennifer Rice, “We’re excited to partner with the Caring Community Advocates to offer this screening at the Senior Fair and connect with people in a setting that’s proactive, welcoming, and fun.”
Attendees can expect interactive demonstrations, giveaways, home safety resources, insurance offerings, and more. The fair has become a trusted one-stop hub for older adults and caregivers throughout Oswego County.
