Oswego Health Celebrates May Which is Healthcare Month

OSWEGO – As is traditional, Oswego Health is celebrating May as Healthcare Month and has several community activities planned.

Among the many specific celebrations during the month is National Nurses Week that begins May 6 and ends May 12, which is Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

Nightingale is noted as the founder of nursing as a modern profession.

More than 400 nurses, including licensed practical, registered, practitioner and certified registered nurse anesthetists are employed at Oswego Health.

On National Nurses Day, May 6, the health system’s nursing staff will be wearing white uniforms and caps.

Nurse’s Day is a part of National Nurses Week, which is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which nurses work to improve healthcare.

Oswego Health’s nurses provide care in a variety of settings, including Oswego Hospital, two urgent care centers, The Manor at Seneca Hill, the physician offices of the Physician Care P.C., and Oswego Home Health Care, all to meet the needs of the community.

Throughout the month, other clinical professionals have their own observances, including National Nursing Home Week.

As part of the month’s celebrations, the health system will recognize employees with milestone years of employment.

More than 150 staff members will be honored at a recognition dinner held May 12.

Oswego Health will acknowledge employees with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of employment, as well as recent retirees.

Community Healthcare Month Activities

Community activities during the month include a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 16 in the lower level conference room of the Oswego Health Services Center, adjacent to Oswego Hospital.

Walk-ins are also welcome.

On May 18, Oswego Health’s two otolaryngologists will host an Ask The Doctor program on allergies at 6 p.m. in the riverside room of GS Steamers in Oswego.

Melanie Pence, DO, and Nicholas Groch, DO, will offer tips and treatment options.

For expectant or new moms, a free community breastfeeding shower will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 20 in Oswego Health Services Center.

Women who are breastfeeding for the first time or those who plan to breastfeed are encouraged to attend this event coordinated by the Oswego County Breastfeeding Coalition.

This is an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of breastfeeding.

There will be information, free gifts and food.

To help residents improve their health status, Oswego Health is offering free workshops developed by Stanford University.

The healthy living classes will be held on Mondays, starting May 9 and ending June 20, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Oswego Hospital’s medical affairs conference room.

Class will not be held May 30 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

This evidenced-based program is designed to help those with any chronic disease, such as arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis or diabetes to improve their health status through its living healthy workshops.

Community members can support local healthcare by taking part in an Auxiliary fundraising spaghetti dinner on May 22.

Dinners will be available at Bridie Manor in Oswego from 1 to 4 p.m.

Residents can eat in or take-out.
