Oswego Health Goes Blue For Dress in Blue Day

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego Health employees dressed in blue as part of national dress in blue day today (March 4), which brings awareness to colon cancer.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.

The best prevention, according to Oswego Health Gastroenterologist Bishnu Sapkota is a colonoscopy.

“It is the gold standard,” Dr. Sapkota said. “It is a one-stop procedure because any polyps that are discovered during the screening are removed. Colonoscopy has been shown to detect 95 percent of all large polyps that are 10 millimeters or greater in size and 75 to 85 percent of all polyps less than five millimeters in size. No other screening test approaches a colonoscopy’s ability to find polyps.”

Community members can learn more about how they can prevent colon cancer at an Ask The Doctor program provided by Dr. Sapkota at 6 p.m. on March 22 at the Riverside Room at GS Steamers in Oswego.

Among those supporting the wear blue initiative are Oswego Health staff from the endoscopy department along with health system leadership.

Each year, the endoscopy staff performs more than 3,000 colonoscopies.
