Oswego Health Goes Blue to Support Colorectal Cancer Awareness

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego Health employees dressed in blue on March 6 to show their support of National Wear Blue Day, which brings awareness to the importance of colon cancer and its detection.
Oswego Health Gastroenterologist Bishnu Sapkota said the best prevention against colon cancer is a colonoscopy.
“It is the gold standard,” Dr. Sapkota said. “It is a one-stop procedure because any polyps that are discovered during the screening are removed. Colonoscopy has been shown to detect 95 percent of all large polyps that are 10 millimeters or greater in size and 75 to 85 percent of all polyps less than five millimeters in size. No other screening test approaches a colonoscopy’s ability to find polyps.”
Dr. Sapkota recommends that community members without a family history of colon cancer/polyps undergo their first colonoscopy beginning at age 50 and every ten years afterwards, if no polyps are detected.
For those who undergo the screening and polyps are found, their physician will recommend the next colonoscopy based on the number, size and nature of polyps.
To community members who may be concerned about the screening’s preparation, Dr. Sapkota, said, “The benefits of this screening greatly outweigh the preparation and I encourage both men and women to undergo this very effective and proven screening.”
