OSWEGO, NY – Oswego High School seniors learned a new skill as part of their academic curriculum.

NBT Bank’s Oswego West Branch Manager Barbara Bateman visited the seniors’ classrooms between May 2 and 12 to teach the students real-life scenarios focused on credit management and the effects of different spending habits.

Some of these seniors may have already had their first personal experience with credit as part of the car-buying process.

And all of these students will be faced with many more scenarios involving credit after graduation, when they enter college or the workforce.

In these lessons from NBT Bank, the students learned that managing financial obligations well can not only help them earn a good credit score, but can actually save them money over time.

They also gained an understanding about the difference between the financial impact of a good credit score and that of a poor credit score, and explain the long-term ramifications of a good credit score on the cost of using their money.

“High school students need to understand how to make informed and thoughtful decisions when it comes to credit, especially as they prepare to take on the cost of college and step into financial independence,” said Bateman. “We are trying to help students develop strong financial habits early so they better understand the impact of their financial decisions as they prepare for college and adulthood and can better serve in their organizations and communities.”

NBT Bank actively provides resources to help parents, educators and employers support kids, teens and young adults in becoming financially savvy.

The bank’s financial education program Strive provides in-classroom and online financial education to help today’s youth and young adults grow their money skills. It is a source for learning and inspiration to help them establish a positive relationship with money and navigate personal finance as their financial needs mature.

NBT has conducted more than 800 classroom presentations in school districts and community groups since launching Strive in 2012.
