OSWEGO – Would you like to make a lovely gift or something beautiful to keep for yourself? Two sessions on quilling, sponsored by Friends of the Library, are taking place soon at Oswego Public Library, 120 E. Second St.
The two sessions are October 25 and November 1 from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Participants will create a quilled object during each session, a card with flowers in the first session and a magnet with flowers or animals in the second session.
Beginning crafters are welcome.
Audrey Scruton of Audrey Elizabeth Creations, who offers the sessions, said she loves “the simplicity of quilling. The basics are paper strips and glue and yet the finished piece is a beautiful piece of art.”
What, you may ask, is quilling? “Quilling, or paper filigree, is an old art of cutting and rolling narrow strips of paper which are curled, twisted and manipulated by fingers or tools into coils and lines of several sizes to create beautiful designs,” according to Scruton.
“Quilling has a rich history. The art dates back to at least the 13th Century. It originated with religious orders that used the gilded edges of old manuscripts to decorate religious artifacts. It is believed the paper was curled around the base of a quill (or feather), hence the name quilling,” she explained.
The two quilling sessions are each open to 12 individuals on a first-come, first-served basis.
The classes are free of charge, with materials provided by Friends of the Library, but registration is required.
Those wanting to attend must sign up at the front desk of the library.
