Personal Hygiene Drive Scheduled

OSWEGO, NY – The Leadership Oswego County Class of 2012 is joining together with local businesses this month to host a personal hygiene drive.

On April 21 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., members of the community can visit the participating locations of Central Square Wal-Mart, the Fulton Wal-Mart or the Oswego Big Lots which will serve as drop-off sites for personal hygiene products such as toothpaste, soap and deodorant.

Members of the Leadership 2012 Class will be at each location to hand out more detailed lists of items needed and assist in the collection of items purchased.

As a group of local professionals, Leadership Oswego County participants are challenged each year to design a project that will help our local communities.

This year, after learning about the high levels of poverty, unemployment, and homelessness in Oswego County, the 2012 Leadership class is coordinating a collection drive for personal hygiene items.

These items – shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorants – are in short supply and in great demand in Oswego County.

Often displaced individuals, and particularly displaced youth, are in need of short-term accommodations and literally have nothing but the clothing on their backs.

Bags of these hygiene items, once assembled, will be stored at the Oswego County Opportunities office for distribution to those individuals at their time of need.

Each year, OCO serves more than 30,000 people through more than 50 human services programs.

The Leadership Oswego County program teaches community trusteeship, leadership skills, current issues and networking to a diverse group of community residents.

Leadership Oswego County prepares a select group of county residents to become the community leaders of the future. This group embarks on a nine-month course of intensive study of leadership skills, Oswego County and its resources, vital issues of today, and visioning for tomorrow.

Key community members teach participants about the skills and knowledge needed to be effective leaders.

Graduates of the program are better prepared to serve the community in the roles of board member, citizen, employee or volunteer with organizations that serve Central New York.
