Phoenix Juniors Win Battle Of Classes

PHOENIX – When officials signaled the end of the Tug o’ War, the culminating event in the 2018 John C. Birdlebough High School Battle of the Classes, it was easy to tell who had claimed the title.

It was the Class of 2019 successfully defending its championship and a thick crowd of juniors with matching T-shirts in azure exploded off their bench and stormed to the middle of the JCB gymnasium to hoist the trophy.

“It feels great, a lot of planning went into this,” said junior class team captain Griffin Goodnow through heavy breaths, just moments after the end of competition. “We had good teamwork and a better team!”

The Battle of the Classes is the culmination of community-service based activities throughout the year and classes earn points for participation and giving back to their community.

As the Battle of the Classes began the junior and senior classes were tied at 41 points.

But, throughout the course of the program, from tandem races to cup-stacking and can-jam, the juniors were able to prevail 53-51.

JCB Principal Thomas Bailer said the Battle of the Classes was a chance to foster good-natured competition and camaraderie among the school’s populations and “an opportunity to showcase our student programs.”

The raucous atmosphere was amplified by electric performances by the JCB Winter Guard and Drum Line.

“Programs like Battle of the Classes builds our community and highlights the incredibly talented students we have,” said Bailer.
