PHOENIX – Gratitude, patriotism and selflessness were in focus at John C. Birdlebough High School on Nov. 8, as students and staff members honored veterans during an assembly.

Members of the student leadership group welcomed dozens of local servicemen and women as part of the annual Veteran’s Day tribute.
Student Emilie Hilliard offered opening remarks and expressed her thanks to the members of the VFW and American Legion who were in attendance.
“We owe you our gratitude,” Hilliard said. “Thank you for your service.”
Throughout the assembly, students read poems, played tribute videos, listened to the Soldier’s Creed, and sat solemnly as local veterans did a wreath presentation, an honor guard salute and ceremoniously folded the flag.

In addition, students Aiden Trumble and Thomas Uhl played “Taps,” which was followed by a visual presentation with the names of local veterans.
Hilliard closed the ceremony by acknowledging the sacrifices that veterans have made, while reiterating her gratitude for their service.
She noted that “our freedom is because of your sacrifices.”
