Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Good News and Bad News

by Contributor | February 24, 2017 12:57 pm

Dear readers,
We have good news and bad news.

The good news is that complaining works.

Two weeks ago we told you that on February 3, the United States Department of Agriculture suddenly removed all inspection reports and other information from its website about the treatment of animals at federally licensed research laboratories, zoos, dog breeding operations (puppy mills) and other facilities.

We urged you to complain vociferously about this unprecedented retreat from government transparency.

You did that, as did the Humane Society of the United States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and the Beagle Freedom Project, as well as Senator Chuck Schumer and many other legislators.

On February 18, the USDA reposted some of the records, including inspection reports for research facilities run by the federal government, as well as some annual reports for private and federal research facilities.

National Geographic has a comprehensive report on its website about what has been going on and why.

It’s too long to go into here, but the bad news is that only a fraction of what was removed is back online.

What is back is useful, but not sufficient for the vital reporting and advocacy work that these records have made possible.

So keep complaining. . .

On a lighter note, how about celebrating your love of fur balls at the Fur Ball?
